Overview
Organised by the Bodhgaya Marathon Committee, an initiative of the Borisu Sesang Foundation, alongside the International Buddhist Confederation, the Bodhgaya Marathon returns for its 4th edition on 14 February 2027 under the enduring theme "Run for Global Peace." The route traces the footsteps of Lord Buddha's own spiritual journey, starting near Magadh University and passing the sacred Mahabodhi Temple, where Buddha attained enlightenment, before continuing through Sujata Garh, the Niranjana River, the Dharmaranya Temple, and finishing near the Caves of Dungeshwari, where he once practiced severe penance. Recognised by AIMS and the Athletics Federation of India, the race has grown into a genuinely international gathering, drawing participants from Korea, Japan, the USA, Bhutan, and across India each year. Beyond the running itself, the event ties into the Borisu Sesang Foundation's broader community work, including a free school in Sravasti and development initiatives in the heritage villages along the marathon route. With prize purses reaching up to ₹50,000 for category winners and a genuinely unique cultural and spiritual backdrop, the race has built a distinctive identity among India's growing calendar of themed marathons.
