About Mordhan

Nashik: Ancient trade center served by Thal ghat (Kasara) & Trimbak ghat, linking ports like Kalyan, Dahanu, Tarapur, & Sopara. Mordhan & Kavnai forts were built to watch Shir ghat (now gone). Mordhan fort, a former watch tower, sits atop the 'Mountain of Peacocks' (Moracha Dongar) in Khairgaon village, named for its past peacock population.

History & Significance

**Mordhan Fort: The Ancient Peak** **Getting There:** From Khairgaon junction, a small road leads 2 mins to the village school (past a saffron Lord Ganesh idol). Mordhan Fort is the raised rock structure visible on the mountain behind the village. **The Ascent:** Reach the mountain foot and ascend via the cut between two hills to a plateau. Moving right leads to the fort, which spreads North-South. **Plateau Landmarks:** A small temple and an ashram are located south of the plateau. Keep the fort on your right as you continue. **Fort Details:** Reaching the top takes \~30 minutes. The fort has water tanks to the North and South, plus a devastated temple structure to the south. Expect strong winds\! **Local Legend (Pandavas):** Gods supposedly resided here. Pandav Leni (Cave) and a temple, now 6 km north of Shahada in the Gomai River, were meant to be built here by the Pandavas in one night. The project was abandoned when a hen clucked at 3:00 am (mistaking it for dawn). They then marched to Nashik to create the Pandavleni there. Remnants showing similarity to Nashik's Pandavleni are still present. **Views from the Top:** Look East for Kalsubai, Alang, Madan, Kulang; North for Kavnai and Tringalwadi; and take in the Nandgaon Dam catchment area.
