About Gowalkot
Gowalkot/Govindgad Fort: Perched on a hill by the Vashishthi River in Chiplun. Protected by the river on three sides and a now-ruined trench on the fourth. Built primarily to protect the Port of Chiplun.

History & Significance
**Fort History Snapshot** *1660 AD:* Shivaji Maharaj conquered Anjanvel and Gowalkot, renaming them Gopalgad and Govindgad. Sambhaji Maharaj later lost Gowalkot to Siddi. *March 20, 1736:* Pilaji Jadhav and Chimaji Appa attacked Siddi Saat. Siddai Saat died (1300 men lost vs 800 Marathas). A pact allowed Siddi to retain Gowalkot. *After 1745 AD:* Tulaji Angre successfully won the fort.

Explore the Fort's Gems! Start at Goddess Karanjeshwar temple foothills. Steps behind it lead to the fort. Entrance: Main doorway is ruined, but two adjoining bastions are intact. Must-See Sights: * Two canons (near the right bastion) * Remains of houses (to the left) * Views of Vashishthi river, Konkan railway, vast fields, and Parshuram mountain (to the right) * Built water pond (dry) * Elevated structure offering a full fort viewFort Walls: 8' wide and intact, with steps built for climbing. Temples: Goddess Redjai temple is on the fort. Alternate Route/Remnants: Descend from the main doorway toward the Chiplun Water filtration center for fort wall remnants and a bastion. West Doorway: Dilapidated doorway on the west side leads to Gowalkot jetty, where 5 canons are buried upside down.

How to Reach
Get to the Fort: Take an autorickshaw from Chiplun (2 km) to Goddess Karanjai temple (at the foothill). Steps behind the temple lead to the fort in just 15 minutes!
