About Mahipalgad

Mahipalgad Fort: 21km NE of Belgaum (in Maharashtra). Built by King Mahipal. History is sparse, but it's an ancient, fortified mountain town. Near the ancient Vaijnath Temple. In British India, residents were recommended for the army. Tip: Combine your visit with Vaijnath Temple and Sundi waterfalls.

Drive or Hike: Reach the fort by vehicle or hike from Dewarwadi town. Landmarks on the way: * Vaijnath Temple (11th-century, Hemadpanthi style, majestic Nandi) - Not Parali-Vaijanath. * Aarogya Bhavani Temple (sacred water cistern behind it). * Mahipalgad rock-cut caves (bring a torch\!). * Military training camp ground (above the caves).Inside the Fort: * See the ruins and a magnificent statue of Shivaji Maharaj at the main entrance. * Citadel: Features the main water source—a big cistern (70x40 wide). * Ambabai Temple (behind the cistern). * Eastern point: Huge, intact bastion. * Shiva Temple (near the bastion). * Explore dilapidated structures (mostly laterite stones) and stone water vessels in front of houses.Time estimate: See the complete fort in a couple of hours. Note: The fort lacks proper maintenance due to insufficient community and government support.

Get there! Dewarwadi is 17 km east of Belgaum (SH 121). Buses run from Belgaum to Dewarwadi and Mahipalgad. Sundi is 5 km from Mahipalgad. Kolhapur is 125 km north of Mahipalgad (NH4).
