Raigad's Defenses: After making Raigad the capital of Swarajya, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj secured his headquarters by strengthening existing forts and building a defensive chain. This chain included Mangad, Panhalghar, Songad, Chambhargad, and Lingana.

Places to See

Fascinating Spots at the Fort * **Vinjhai Goddess Temple:** Located on the plateau before the fort entrance. * **Main Entrance:** Stairs built into the rock lead up from behind the temple. You enter through the north-facing main door (in good shape with intact bastions). * **Ruined Doorway:** Look left for a ruined doorway with a Nagshilpa (Snake carving) on the arch. * **Stay/Water:** Past the ruined doorway, find a cave for shelter and a water tank. Another water tank is carved into the bastion itself. * **Summit Tanks:** One route to the summit has six rock-carved water tanks (caution: thick grass surrounds them). * **Citadel:** Reach the citadel by walking along the fortified wall. * **Citadel Ruins:** Find a mansion on a raised platform and a ruined temple. * **Potable Water:** Two water tanks on the topmost part of the fort offer potable water. * **View:** Raigad fort is visible from the top on a clear day.

How to Reach

Mangad Fort: Getting There **Option 1: Road Trip from Mangaon** * Mangad is 17 km from Mangaon (on the Mumbai-Goa highway). * **Route:** Mangaon → Nizampur (10 km) → Borwadi (4 km) → Mashidwadi (3 km). * Take a bus or auto from Mangaon to Nizampur, then an auto to Mashidwadi (the base village). * The road ends at a cement pavement; follow the unpaved road left (keep the fort on your left) to reach the cleft between the hills. * Stairs leading to the fort are behind the temple in the cleft.**Option 2: Konkan Railway (Cheapest)** * Board the Diva – Madgaon passenger (06:00 AM) to reach Mangaon (10:00 AM). * **Return Trip (Mangad only):** Board the train at Mangaon station at 05:00 PM. * **Combine with Panhalghar:** Proceed to Lonere village. Board the Madgaon – Diva passenger at Goregaon Station at 05:00 PM.
