About Takmak

Discover Takmak Fort! Located in Vasai Tehsil, Thane District. Built in the 12th century to guard the Mahim (Mahakawati) business route. Surrounded by dense forest, it's naturally separate from the main hill. Challenge for trekkers: finding the eastern entrance, tunnel, and path to the top, as noted in historical texts. Maintenance efforts since 2007 by Mr. Shridatta Raut (Kille Vasai Mohim) cleaned one of the 13 available cisterns (drinking water). In 2013, Trekshitiz Sanstha marked the path from Sakwar village with oil-painted arrows. Trekkers, use these arrows and visit!

History & Significance

**Takmak Fort History** Built in the 12th century by King Bheemdev (son of King Bhimdev). Conquered by the Sultans. King Shivaji's win (along with Kohaj & Asheri) remains an assumption. Passed to Portuguese rule. It gained importance after Chimaji Appa's Vasai campaign. Maratha warriors won it in 1732, but it reverted to Portuguese custody by agreement. Pantaji Moreshwar won the fort on April 8, 1737, and 25 villages were allocated for funds. After Vasai Mohim, the fort's importance declined. In the 18th century, the British used it as a jail, deliberately demolishing parts (hill/cisterns) to prevent reconstruction.

Places to See

Explore Takmak Fort! **Entry & Key Points:** * From Sakwar village, view the fort's south part (Nose). * Spot the pinnacle, "Ghoda" or "Khutta," near the plateau/hill range. * Enter via the west fortification, passing rock-carved steps near "Ghoda."**The Southern Tip:** * A path right after crossing the western walls leads to the southernmost tip—an observation point with great views of Sakwar and surrounding villages.**Cisterns & Ruins:** * Follow the ramparts to find twin cisterns (cleaned by Shridatta Raut and team). The right one has potable water. * See carved pillar bases and a groove for water overflow nearby. * Further along, hidden house remnants can be seen.**Cannons & North Plateau:** * The path divides: right leads to the 2 bangle cannon. * From the cannon, the footpath splits: one to the fort's edge, one to the north plateau.**More Cisterns (British Attempted Demolition):** * Descending left, find twin cisterns above an old historical one. * Later, see two bunches of three cisterns (not for drinking). The British attempted to demolish all these.**North Side & War History:** * Descend a slippery path to the north side, observing spread fortification rocks. * Spot the Watch Tower area—site of a battle between Maratha warriors and Portuguese. The Maratha warrior escaped via a now-mysterious tunnel and entry gate (way vanished due to dense jungle). 2 cisterns are visible near the vanished entry way.**Water Supply Point:** * Near the main footpath/plateau, look for a 2' wide x 2' high hole where water was poured (from Pakhali) for soldiers on the watch tower.**Views from the Fort:** * South: Kama hill range * West: Waitarana River * East: Wandri Lake
