History & Significance
**Vasai Fort History** Portuguese began construction in 1526, creating a chain of forts (Shirgao, Mahim, Kelve) to control the region. They forced locals to convert. The Peshwas launched a campaign against the Portuguese in 1737. Led by Chimaji Appa, warriors including Gangaji Naik, Shankaraji Phadke, and Baji Rethekar fought back. The fort was completed during the Vasai campaign, built in the monsoons by 2,000 workers.
Places to See
Bhavangad Fort: Built on a small hill! Enter via the main Machi entrance in 10 minutes. Note: Walls were quickly built using just rocks—no lime cement! See the renovated Bhavangadeshwar temple. Western Citadel Entrance: This Gomukhi-style entry used limestone. The arch is broken, but the bastion and walls are intact. Find vestibules for guards nearby. Inside: A square water tank (full of water, protected by a local wall) and a tree-filled citadel area. Explore: Start right of the tank's fortification. A small path leads down from the NE corner. Find 2 caves on the left (likely grain storage). This path goes to Dandapada village. Return from the caves to complete your visit!
