History & Significance

Bharatgad Fort History: 1670: Shivaji Maharaj surveyed the hill but couldn't fortify it—no water! 1680: Fearing Kolhapur Chief Bavdekar, the Phond Savants dug a 228' deep well, securing water. 1701: Fortification complete. 1748: Phond Savants joined the Peshwas but lost Bharatgad when Tulaji Angre attacked. Savants quickly won it back. 1787: Savants lost the fort to the ruler of Karvir, but it was later handed back. 1818: Captain Hutchinson won the fort for the British Empire. Note: Gunfire caused the well water to vanish; the garrison used wooden barrels for storage.

Places to See

5-Minute Climb to the Fort! Stairs built into the rock lead the way. **Current Condition:** Main doorway is in ruins, but the fort walls and bastions are well-preserved. **Hidden Feature:** A 20 X 10 deep ditch surrounds the fort, often hidden by dense plants. **Exploration Tip:** After the main door, keep the fort wall on your left and head south to reach the bastions. Look for a deep ditch on the south side—likely used for monsoon water storage. **The Citadel:** Stands elevated in the center. It has four corner bastions. Walls are massive: 17–18 feet high and 5 feet thick. Notice the porches built into the main door\! **Inside the Citadel:** Find a small temple and a large well nearby (228 feet deep\!) cut through solid rock. Remains of grain and ammunition storage houses are visible to the right. **Secret:** A hidden door in the southern bastion leads back toward the main entrance.
