Places to See

Fascinating Spots at the Fort Saptatirtha Lake: Located east of the temple. Features a well-built lake with temple-like constructions that held Lord Vishnu idols (now moved to Harishchandreshwar temple caves). IMPORTANT: Water is polluted due to trekkers' waste (plastic). Was potable 7 years ago, now unsafe for swimming. Kedareshwar Cave: Found right of Harishchandreshwar temple. Contains a big, water-surrounded Shivlinga (5 ft high, water is waist-deep). Water is ice-cold. Look for carved sculptures. ACCESS WARNING: Impassable during monsoon due to strong stream. Konkan Kada (Cliff): The fort's highlight\! Offers breathtaking views of the region and the setting sun. Unique concave shape makes it distinct. Only ascended twice by rock-climbers (Pinnacle group recently ascended, 12 years after the first). MEMORIAL: A monument marks the spot where a youth from Pune jumped. Look for the rare circular rainbow phenomenon. Taramati Peak: The highest point on the fort. See the whole Naneghat range and Murbad forts. Leopards frequent surrounding forests. Caves on Harishchandragad: Numerous caves used for accommodation, particularly at the foot of Taramati peak. Others are near the temple, citadel, or deep in the forests. A 30 ft deep natural cave is NW of the fort, right of Kokan Kada. Nageshwar Temple (near Khireshwar): Great antique construction with diverse artistic works and beautiful ceiling carvings. Caves nearby. Temple of Harishchandreshwar: Marvelous example of ancient Indian stone carving (16m high). Surrounded by ancient water tanks and a few caves. River Mangal Ganga originates nearby. Top resembles North-Indian temples (similar to a temple in Buddha-Gaya). Features stone tombs. DRINKING WATER: Cisterns near the temple provide water. Kashitirtha Temple: Fascinating temple carved from a single huge rock. Entrances on all four sides. Main entrance has guard face sculptures. Don't miss the Devnagri inscription about saint Changdev on the left entrance. Konkan Kada, Harishchandreshwar Temple, Kedareshwar Cave, Taramati Peak, Saptatirtha Pushkarni Way to Reach: Reach Kasara or Igatpuri by train → travel to base village (Pachnai or Khireshwar) by road → trek to fort via selected route
