History & Significance

Mystery surrounds the fort's builder, though water tanks suggest the Chalukya era. It fell under the King of Ramnagar in the 15th century, then was won by Mohammed Begada, and later controlled by the Pendharis. Abandoned after two Portuguese (from Daman) attacks in 1551. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj refurbished it in 1676. It remained under the Maratha empire until 1780, when the Wels took control.

Places to See

Start your 30-min climb via stairways. Trees are conserved on the fort slope. **Entrance Tips:** The main wall entrance is partially demolished. **Instead, take the path right** to find a hidden **6ft high entrance door** between bastions. 10 stairs lead to the fort top. **On the Summit:** * **Goddess Kalika Temple** & small shops. * Fort is spread South-North. * Two parts: **Summit** & **Citadel** (protected by fortified wall/bastions). * Steps near the temple lead to the **Citadel** (entrance is gone; many structure remnants remain). * See the extensive **Paar river** from the top. * The fort was crucial for keeping watch over the territory.**Descent Path:**1. Descend to **Goddess Chandika Temple** after visiting the Citadel structures. 2. Also find a **Lord Hanuman Temple** nearby. 3. Continue past the temple to the **tomb of Chandpir baba** (on the left). 4. Find a second doorway and a path to descend. 5. Near the stairs to **Rameshwar Temple** (north side), spot **three canons** lying on the ground. (Note: Atul Corporation, the assigned Trust, failed to care for the canons after concretizing the fort). 6. Head back toward the Chandika Mata Temple to see **5 rock-carved water tanks** (on the left). 7. A concrete bridge next to the tanks leads to the fort entrance.
