History & Significance

Built in 1140 by King Pratapbimb on Mahakavati (Mahim Creek) as his capital, the fort boosted 12th-century trade. Gerald Aungier later reconstructed it under British control. In 1672, 100 soldiers and 30 canons repelled a Portuguese attack. However, Siddhi Yakut Khan of Janjira captured the fort on Feb 14, 1689, raiding the region for a year before the British retook it.

Places to See

A prime example of British architecture, featuring bastions, strong walls, decorative pillars, and wonderful carvings. Note: The fort is currently blocked by encroachment.
