About Lingana

**Lingana Fort Pinnacle:** Always a dramatic sight! The British destroyed all access in the early 19th century, making it inaccessible until hikers successfully climbed the pinnacle in 1981. This invulnerable fort protected Raigad, the capital of the Maratha Empire, and was used to hold prisoners convicted of dangerous crimes.

History & Significance

Lingana Fort History: Northeast of Raigad, approx. 2,969 ft high, 4.5 miles to reach. Built by Shivaji with Raigad after defeating Chandrarao More. Retained by Shivaji Maharaj per the Treaty of Purandar. Remnants: storehouse and cisterns (ramparts ruined). Worshipped Goddesses: Shree Janani and Somjai. Maintained using Raigad's treasury until 1786. Captured and destroyed by the British in 1818. Today, it's a major rock-climbing destination.

Places to See

Small fort, big adventure! Eroded soil makes the climb challenging—walk carefully! **Cave & Views:** At the pinnacle's base is a cave (fits 50 people), believed to be a grain store. It faces west, offering stunning views of **Raigad Fort** at dawn. **Memorial:** Nearby, find a small memorial for mountaineer **Santosh Gujar**, who passed away descending **Lingana** in 1979. **Water & Climb:** Past the cave, several cisterns hold potable water. Follow the slippery route along the periphery (rope recommended). Ascend vertical rock patches. **Summit Climb:** After a 150-meter ascent, find a broken fortification and the only high-altitude water cistern. Look for young vultures practicing flight\! Continue ascending another 200 meters to reach the summit. **Summit Views:** From the top, spot **Nagaarkhana** and **Jagdishwar temple of Raigad**, plus **Rajgad** and **Torna** to the east. Feel on top of the world\! (Note: Remnants above the cave are difficult to reach.)
