About Kamandurg
Kamandurg Fort: Second highest in Thane district! This rarely visited historical site features a steep 2.5-hour climb through dense forest and rock-cut steps. It played a key role in the Battle of Vasai, originally built to monitor trade on the Ulhas river. Ancient signs still remain!

History & Significance
**Fort History Snapshot** First mentioned as "Kamvandurg" in the 11th-century 'Mahakavti Bakhar', this fort guarded the Ulhas river trade route from Kalyan creek port. **Key Events:** * **1683:** Sambhaji Maharaj captures the fort from the Portuguese. * **Sep 12, 1685:** Portuguese recapture it, but soon abandon it due to lack of water. * **1737 (Peshwa-Portuguese War):** Shankarji Keshav urged the Peshwas to restore the fort, citing its crucial location near Portuguese land and its value for controlling the Kalyan-Bhiwandi route.**Rehabilitation:** Two new water tanks were built, and old ones repaired, making the fort viable again\!
Places to See
Summit Sights! Visible from base village Belkundi, reach the fort via two hills and rock-cut steps. Enter through a ruined doorway to see the 100-foot-higher summit. *Remains:* 5 rock-cut water tanks (potable till January). Pass a carved stone statue (2 women with earrings) and a Satvahana Era water tank on the trail to the top. From the summit, spot Tungareshwar, Gumtara fort, Vasai creek, and the area up to Dharavi!

How to Reach
Get to Kamandurg: 3 Ways! 1) TRAIN: Alight at Kaman station (Diva-Vasai line). Train halts at Dombivli (5:20 am), reaches Kaman (6:05 am). 2) ROAD: Kaman is 22 km from Bhiwandi (via Bhiwandi-Vasai road). 3) WESTERN RAIL: Take an auto from Naigaon station to Chinchpada, then another auto to Kaman village. *DIRECTIONS FROM KAMAN VILLAGE:* Pass Syndicate bank towards Belkundi village. Turn right near the "Belkundi 1 km" milestone for Belkundi pada, leading to Kamandurg. WARNING: Cross two streams during monsoons. The route joins the path from Devkundi village further on.
Important Notes
Steep ascent ahead! The final steps are cut into rock and get very hot—no shade here. Climb early morning is highly recommended. Find marked arrows on the route (added by Trekshitiz Sanstha in 2010) or hire a local guide from the village.
