About Thalner

Thalner Fort: Built on the banks of the Tapi River. Once the capital of the Khandesh region and a key spot on the Surat-Burhanpur trade route. Sadly, the fort is currently neglected. Fun Fact: Famous singer Lata Mangeshkar's grandparents were from Thalner!

History & Significance

**Thalner Fort: A History of Battles & Trade** **1128 A.D.:** Controlled by Jivaji & Govaji (Gavli/Ahir family). Devgiri's King, Daulatrao (Bajirao's son), awarded them control as the fort was well-maintained (23 nearby forts were in ruins). **1370 A.D.:** Ferozeshah Tughlak won Khandesh, made Thalner the capital under administrator Malikraja Faruki. **1371 A.D.:** Sultan of Gujarat attacked; Malikraja took refuge in the fort. **1417 A.D.:** After Malikraja's death (1497 A.D.), his first son, with support from the Sultan of Malwa, took control from the second son. **1418 A.D.:** Mohammed Begada (Sultan of Gujarat) captured Thalner, looted nearby provinces. **1511 A.D.:** Mohammed Begada gave half of Khandesh to his commander Malik Hasanuddin (allegedly murdered next year). **1566 A.D.:** Changez Khan (Sultan of Gujarat) defeated Miran Mohammed (King of Khandesh). **1600 A.D.:** Control passed to Akbar. Fort was prosperous, vital on the **Surat-Burhanpur trade route**. **1750 A.D.:** Peshwas took over, handed to Holkars. **1800 A.D.:** Passed to Nimbalkars, but Holkars reclaimed it the following year. **1818 A.D.:** British conquest led by General Sir Thomas Hissop. Known as one of history's bloodiest conquests (250 Maratha and 25 British soldiers killed).

**Thalner Fort: Ruins & Hidden Gems** This historic fort sits on a 100m hill by the Tapi River's horseshoe bend. Mostly in ruins, a 60' brick wall near Pataleshwar temple and two bastions remain intact. On the fort: Two small temples (one for Goddess Saptashrungi, one empty). **Nearby Village Spots:**1. **Jamadar Wada:** A small, fort-like residence near Pataleshwar Shankar Temple. * Features: 4 bastions (12' high each), a 20' high entrance door studded with nails, and beautiful wooden carvings on the door and houses inside. * Details: Basement room with steps. Names Ramsingh and Guman Singh written near the entrance. (Residents offer tours but lack historical facts.) 2. **10 Kabri (10 Graves):** Group of graves for deceased Faruki family members and important personalities. * Features: One octagonal grave with Arabic scripture. Others uniform (11'x11'). * Known Burials (4 of 10): * Malik Raja (1396) * Malik Nasir (1437) * Miran Adilshah (1441) * Miran Mubarak Khan (1457)
