History & Significance

Fort History Highlights: Origin Unknown. Came under Malik Ahmed (Nijamshahi founder) in 1485. 1635-36: Shahaji Raje, under threat, moved to Mahuli with Jijabai and Shivaji. Khan Jaman besieged the fort. Shahaji Raje surrendered after Portuguese refused aid. Shivaji took the fort from Mughals on Jan 8, 1658. Lost/won back by Shivrai (1661-1665). Lost again in Treaty of Purandar (1665). Moghal Sardar Manohardas Gaud oversaw major construction. Feb 1670: Shivaji Maharaj failed to conquer Mahuli; Marathas suffered heavy losses. Despite the victory, Manohardas Gaud resigned; Alveerdi Beg appointed chief. Victory! On June 16, 1670, Moropant Pingle conquered the forts, adding Mahuli, Bhandargad, and Palasgad to Swarajya.
