About Kenjalgad

**Kenjalgad Fort: Wai, Maharashtra** Eleven miles (18 km) north-west of Wai, this fort sits on the Mandhardev spur of the Mahadev hill range. You can spot its stone scarp (30-40 high) rising like a cap on the hill from a distance! The fort is rhomboid: 388m long axis, 175m short axis.

History & Significance

**Fort History Snapshot** Built by Bhoj Rajas of Panhala (12th Century). **Key Battles & Captures:** * **1648:** Won by Adilshah of Bijapur. * **1674 (April 24):** Captured by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during his Chiplun campaign. He marched with soldiers, surprising Kenjalgad. Garrison head Gangaji Vishwasrao Kirdat was killed. * **1701:** Captured by Aurangzeb. * **1702:** Recaptured by Maratha Army. * **1818 (March 26):** Captured by British forces (detachment sent by Gen. Pritzler) after the fall of Peshwa.

**Fort Highlights** This small plateau fort holds history! * **Ruins:** The main entrance was ruined when the British dismantled the fort. * **Key Spots:** See the small, roofless Magazine Room and the ruined Kacheri (Sadar). * **Worship:** Idols of Kenjai devi are located on the fort. * **Artifacts:** Two lime mixers with mortar stones remain in good condition. * **Water History:** Originally held three large and six small water tanks. The British blew up the walls to drain the water. * **Note:** There is no live spring on the fort.

How to Reach

GETTING THERE: ROAD ACCESS: Reachable by road from Wai (25 km) or Bhor (17 km). TREK ROUTES (2 options):1. Raireshwar Plateau/Kenjalgad Col Path: \~1 hour trek. 2. Nearest Route (Base Village - Ghera Kenjal): \~30 minutes trek.TRAIL DETAILS: The trek passes through forest area, reaching the southern tip, then along the eastern scarp. The final ascent uses 55 carved, rock-cut steps on the eastern side. ACCESSIBILITY: Open year-round. Note: Monsoon (rainy season) brings poor visibility and stormy winds due to cloud cover. ESSENTIALS: No water available on the fort or trek route. NIGHT HALT: Possible at the temple in the base village.
