History & Significance
**Fort History: Markandeya** In 1639, Alivardi Khan (by order of Aurangzeb) conquered all forts in Nashik province, including Indrai fort, which still bears a Persian victory inscription. Later, Shivaji Maharaj reclaimed Nashik's forts, including Markandeya, during the Battle of Wani-Dindori. The Mughals briefly regained control after his death.

**Markandeya Fort Highlights** The pass/valley between Markandeya and Ravlya-Javlya forts is called **Mulanbari**. Your ascent to Markandeya starts here\! First, reach the open part of the fort, then follow rock-cut steps to the citadel. **Must-See Spots:** * **Dhyaan Guha:** Two meditation caves located beneath the path on the left. * **Fortification Ruins:** Spot the remains of bastions and the fortification wall as you ascend. * **Citadel Access:** The rock-cut path to the citadel is on the left where the steps end.**Water Tanks:** * **Kamandalu Tirth:** A rock-cut tank with water year-round. * **Others:** Three more water tanks (and one dried tank) nearby.**Summit:** * **Lord Markandeshwar Temple:** Located at the top, houses an idol of **Sage Markandeya** and a **Shivling**. * **Views:** Enjoy panoramic views of **Saptashrungi gad, Dhodap, and Ravlya-Javlya**.

How to Reach
How to Reach: Wani is 40 km from Nashik (Nashik-Saputara highway). Base village is Babapur, 9 km from Wani (Wani-Kalwan road). Two routes: 1. Take a vehicle/bus to Mulane Pass (2 km from Babapur). Right road leads to Ravlya-Javlya, left to Markandeya. 2. Steep ascent via the valley between Saptashrungi Gad and Markandeya.
