About Samrajgad

Samrajgad (a.k.a. Danda-Rajapuri) sits southwest of Murud village seashore, near the famous Janjira fort. Built by Shivaji Maharaj to watch Janjira and block land access, Samrajgad was the main base for attacks against Janjira, which was controlled by the Siddi (Habshi/Abyssinians).

History & Significance

Samrajgad: The Epic Battle for Janjira Access! Built by Vyankoji Datto for Shivaji Maharaj near Rajapuri, Samrajgad challenged Siddi's access to Murud. First Attack: Siddi's initial boat attack using cannons tied to palm trees failed. The Decisive Battle (Feb 11, 1671): Siddi Khairat (500 Habshi by land) and Siddi Kasim (by sea, using ladders) launched a pincer attack during the Holi festival. Outcome: Maratha forces fought fiercely but were overwhelmed when the gunpowder stores exploded. Samrajgad was lost to Siddi, forcing Shivaji Maharaj to cancel his planned attack on Janjira.

Places to See

Explore Samrajgad Citadel! Only the massive, binder-less stone walls remain standing today. No other ruins exist, but the fort offers views of Janjira (South) and Padmadurg (West).
