History & Significance
Built by Shilahar King Bhoj-II (c. 1191-1192), this fort initially fell under Adilshahi rule. Key events: Marathas claimed the fort (Oct 7, 1673), including it in Swarajya. Aurangjeb captured it in 1701, but Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj later took it back. Finally, the British seized Pandavgad in 1818.
Places to See
Start your ascent from Menavali village to the first plateau, where you'll find the temple of Lord 'Bhairoba' and ancient statue remnants. The main entrance ruins are just 15 minutes away. Climb the rock-hewn steps to the next 'Machi' (with two cisterns). To the north, spot two tanks and a Parsee's Bungalow. **The Citadel ('Balekilla')** The path to the citadel features six cisterns (one large; a possible seventh exists). These resemble the seven cisterns at forts like Chavand. The citadel entrance and bastions are in good condition; ramparts are approx. 25 ft high. Inside, see the beautifully carved statue of Lord 'Hanuman' (left) and the temple of Goddess Pandjai (right). Nearby, find three grinding wheels (used for mixing limestone, jaggery, and lead—two are preserved) and a dried lake. Look for puzzling old construction remnants and a few cannon balls outside the temple. The citadel is smaller and features a part resembling Lohgad's 'Vinchu Kata'. **Key Facts & Ownership** You can also ascend from the eastern side to 'Dhawadi' village (via Pandavas' Caves). The fort is private property, owned by Mapco Company (sold by a Sardar). Caretaker Mr. Sarvodaya Wadia has protected a cistern, providing potable water, and prohibited smoking/drinking. Allow 2 hours to explore the fort completely.
