About Suvarnadurg

Harnai: Ancient Port City. Suvarnadurga is the main fort, protected by lookout forts: Kanakdurga, Gova, and Fattegad. **1688 Siege Drama:** Mughal General Siddi Kasim besieged Suvarnadurga. Fort in-charge Achaloji Mohite betrayed the Marathas and joined the Mughals. **The Rise of Kanhoji Angre (Age 20):** Annoyed by the betrayal, Kanhoji Angre arrested Mohite and attacked the Mughals. He was captured and imprisoned, but made a daring escape, swimming back to Suvarnadurga. His bravery inspired the Maratha army, holding the fort until the monsoon forced Siddi Kasim to flee. **Hero's Legacy:** Kanhoji Angre was appointed fort commander. He became known as "Samudratla Shivaji" (Shivaji of the Seas). In 1698, he was appointed Admiral of the Maratha Naval Fleet.

History & Significance

**Fort History Snapshot** * Built during the Shilahar dynasty. * **1660:** Captured by Shivaji Maharaj from Ali Adil Shah, then rebuilt and strengthened. * Features a hidden entrance\! * During Rajaram Maharaj's reign, Kanhoji Angre addressed castellan dishonesty. * Tulaji Angre took charge (seat of power), but fell out with the Peshwas. * Peshwas, supported by the British, defeated Tulaji Angre in war. * **1802:** Bajirav Peshwa fled here from Yashwantrao Holkar before escaping to Vasai. * **Nov 1818:** Captured by Colonel Kennedy, Captain Chappel, and Lieutenant Dominiset, with 50 soldiers and 30 seafarers.

Places to See

Fort Highlights **Main Entrance:** Unique Gomukhi door, hidden between two massive bastions. It faces North from the East direction. Spot the carvings: Lord Hanuman (wall) and a turtle (step). **Structure:** 15 intact bastions provide strength. **Water Sources:** Potable water tanks, ponds, and wells are present, but may dry up in summer. Find a well with plenty of water left of the main gate. **Other Features:** Two granaries and a decrepit building are nearby. Towards the southwest, catch clear views of Kanakadurga, Fattegad, and Gova fort. Hidden doorway ("Chor darwaja") and a rainwater pond on the west side. **Northwest:** out remnants of a building, an ammunition storage facility, and a water tank. **Location:** Suvarnadurg fort sits on a rocky island in the Arabian Sea. The fort was built on elevated, flattened rocks. Old cannons are visible opposite the main entry gate.

How to Get There: Nearest rail: Khed (Konkan Railway, Indian Railways). From Mumbai: Reach Murud Harne (15 km via Dapoli). Final approach: Boats only, departing from Harnai. Arrange your boat with local fishermen!
