History & Significance

Sudhagad Fort: Ancient History & Conquest **2200 Years of History:** 'Thanale' excavations suggest Sudhagad is ancient. Local Puranas say Sage 'Bhrugu' established the Goddess 'Bhorai' temple here. **Key Conquest (1648):** The fort joined 'Swarajya' in 1648. Old records detail the conquest: Malavji Naik Karake used ladders at Sakharadara. Jadhav, Saranayak, and Haibatrao climbed under chieftain 'Maloji Bhosale'. 25 soldiers killed the guards; the fort chief was killed, and the fort was conquered. **Renaming & Significance:** Shivaji Maharaj renamed Bhorapgad to Sudhagad. Sambhaji later met Akbar (Aurangjeb's rebellious son) at 'Pachchapur village' (at the fort's base). **Tragic Event:** Sambhaji killed key 'Ashta-Pradhan Mandal' members—Annaji Datto, Balaji Aavji Chitnis, his son Aavji Ballal, and Hiroji Pharjand—in 'Parli' village near Sudhagad.
