About Ratangad(Ratnadurg)
Mirgad Fort (a.k.a. "Mirya Dongar") is in Pen Taluka, Raigad district. It served primarily as a watch tower. Nearby is Ratnadurga (Ratangad) fort, located on a small hill behind Mirgad. A pass between Mirgad and Ratangad fort protected the ancient Pen-Khopoli trade route, highlighting its surveillance role. Historical Clue: A water tank suggests the fort dates back to the Satvahana era. Good News: Mirgad can be explored in a single day trip from Mumbai!

Places to See
**Fort Exploration Guide** **Base Village:** Saymaal (35 houses, primary school, Lord Ganapati Temple). Find a broken cannon near the school\! **The Ascent:**1. From Saymaal, follow the unpaved road toward Ratangad, through the valley. 2. 10 min walk to fort base. 3. 10 min climb to the 1980s local Goddess Temple (3 new idols, old idols outside). Start the fort climb by going left, behind the temple.**Trail Notes:** Steps are hard to see due to rare visits. Trails are covered in thick leaves/slippery soil. **Mid-Level Plateau:** Reach a flat ground in 30 minutes (steep climb\!). See stone potholes (used for watchkeepers' shelters). Great views: Ranjan hill, Tilore village, Dolavli village, and more. **Water Tanks:** * Up from the plateau: Rock-cut tank (sediment buildup). Circumvent it to the left. * Moving ahead: Another dried-up tank. * Further on: Cleft between Mirgad and the village. Find rock potholes and hand/foot holds. * Careful descent: Find a filled tank (unfit for drinking, has drain holes). * Rappelling access: Fourth dried-up tank (10 ft rock patch).**Fort Top (5 min from first tank):** * Follow the devastated fort wall (has drain holes). * Spot an idol of 'Kshetrapal' (guardian of the area). * Look for a stone flower carving (suggests a past temple) and a Shiv Ling. * Top views: Mirgad, Manikgad, and Hetavne dam.**Pro-Tip:** Routes are unclear due to low visitor traffic. **A local guide is recommended\!**
