About Terekhol Fort

Terekhol Fort is located at the mouth of the Terekhol River, bordering Goa and Maharashtra. It is now the Fort Tiracol Heritage hotel. Historically, it was used for surveillance of the Terekhol River and coast for two centuries. Visitors are welcome daily from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm.

History & Significance

**Fort Terekhol: A History of Conflict & Freedom** Built in the 17th Century by Maharaj Khem Sawant Bhonsle of Sawantwadi to monitor the Portuguese. **Key Dates & Events:** * **1746:** Portuguese take over and renovate the fort, adding churches and capsule-shaped bastions (Portuguese architecture). * **1794 (Briefly):** Marathas gain possession, but Portuguese quickly recapture. * **1835:** Bernardo Peres da Silva, ex-Governor of Goa, led an unsuccessful revolt from this fort against the Portuguese. * **Aug 15, 1954:** Goa Liberation Movement freedom fighters, led by Alfred Alphonso, occupied the fort for one day. * **Aug 15, 1955:** Hirve Guruji (Tulshiram Balkrishna Hirve) of Panvel and Sheshnath Wadekar, plus 127 unarmed workers, held a Satyagraha. Both leaders were martyred by Portuguese firing. A memorial is nearby. * **1961:** Goa achieves independence. * **Dec 9, 1976:** Converted into a heritage resort.

Places to See

Fact: Goa renovated the fort into a five-star hotel, modifying the original structure. Enter via the South entrance to see the historic Portuguese Saint Anthony's church. Note: The church is usually closed to the public. Behind it, climb up to the Portuguese-style capsule-shaped bastion. Due to the resort, viewing the remnants takes less time.

How to Reach

**How to Reach Terekhol Fort** **Location:** Terekhol village is on the Panjim marine highway. **Distance:** \~60 km from Malvan, \~40 km from Panjim. **Bus Route 1 (Malvan):** Take a bus from Malvan to Vengurle, then continue to Terekhol village. **Bus Route 2 (Fort Combo):** The distance between Terekhol and Redi (Yashwantgadh) is \~7 km. You can view both forts in a single day by bus\! **Taxi + Ferry (Panjim):** Catch a taxi from Panjim Bus Stand (\~45 km from the fort) to Keri, then take a ferry to Terekhol fort.

Important Notes

Private Vehicle Trip: Start early from Malvan. Hit Nivati Fort (25 km from Malvan). Head further south to Redi/Yashwantgad (40 km) & Terekhol (7 km). Stay options: Malvan or Panaji.
