History & Significance
Bhushangad Fort History: Built by King Devgiri Singhan II (1210-1247). Won and rebuilt by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1676 from Adilshah. Later renamed "Islamtara" by Aurangzeb. Ceded to the British in 1848.
Places to See
Fort Highlights (1 Hour Visit) **Entrance:** Look for the newly built arch and steps leading up. The entrance, facing east, was designed in the "Gomukhi" style, with bastions still standing. **Defenses:** The steps flank the fort bastion and fortified wall for easy defense against enemies. Porches were built inside for gatekeepers. **Route:** Pass along the fortified wall where you'll find a deep well. A path left of the entrance leads to a large bastion with canon pockets—offering a great view of the fort's midpoint. **Temples & Ponds:** Approaching the midpoint, see a built-in pond and the Temple of Lord Shiva on the right. Further on is the Temple of Goddess Harnai, marked by a lamp post and vermilion-painted stones. The midpoint is an elevated ground. Another pond sits on the lower side of the temple, alongside the fortification wall (you can walk the whole wall). **Bhuyari Temple:** A broad, unpaved path to the left after descending the entrance steps (below the bastion) leads to the Temple of Goddess Bhuyari. Note: This temple is newly built, filling a secret chamber.
