History & Significance
History Highlight: Parvati & Shiva's wedding site! Fort Significance: In the late 16th century, Lakhuji Jadhav (Shahaji's father-in-law) and his three sons were assassinated by Nizamshah. Shahaji left Nizamshah to establish his territory, targeting his ancestral 'Jahagir,' Pune, then under Adilshah. Shahaji recaptured Pune, infuriating Adilshah, who sent an army led by Rairao. Shahaji secured his pregnant wife, Jijamata, at Fort Shivneri. Pune was captured and devastated. Murar Jagdev, close to Shahaji and eminent in Adilshah’s ranks, built a fort at Bhuleshwar temple for Pune province administration. Jagdev was assassinated by Adilshah in 1635. Later, Jijamata and young Shivaji led the Pune administration from Lal Mahal, and the importance of DaulatMangal diminished.
Places to See
Easy access via a tar road to the top temple parking lot, or a scenic hike. Look for old stone arch doors on the path. The temple sits at the fort's highest point, offering serene views. Ramparts and bastions are visible but diminishing. Bhuleshwar Temple: A 12th-century architectural marvel, this Shiva temple features a huge Nandi sculpture (approx. 6 ft high) and a stone-carved tortoise. The east-facing entrance is grand, with Ganesh (left) and Vishnu (right). Precise carvings cover the walls and pillars. Inside, the cool, two-level sanctum sanctorum is rejuvenating. Pradakshina reveals worship of various deities (Vitthal Rakhumai, Ganesh, Shiva). Features include a huge bell and a Deepmaal (stone oil lamp tower). Allow 1+ hour, more for detailed sculpture viewing. Note: Half-broken/beheaded idols remain from demolition by Muslim rulers, saved by local resistance. A smaller Shiva temple and old banyan tree are nearby. Prasad is distributed every Sunday.
