About Torna
Torna Fort: Cradle of the Maratha Empire! Captured by Shivaji Maharaj in his teens. James Douglas called it the "cradle of the Marathi Empire." (If Sinhagad is Lion's den, Torna is Eagle's nest.) Name may come from "Toran" trees. Located in Pune district (18.36° Lat, 73.37° Long). Base village: Velhe. Surrounded by Velvandi River (South) and Kanad River Valley (North).

History & Significance
Fort History: Origin unknown. Caves/sculptures suggest "SHAIVA PANTH" (Lord Shiva followers) era. Key Rulers: * 1470–1486 A.D.: Captured by Malik Ahmed (Bahmani ruler). Later ruled by Nizamshah. * 1646: Shivaji Maharaj takes control, names it "PRACHANDAGAD," builds new monuments, and renovates it after his Agra escape. * Post-Sambhaji: Moguls take over, but Marathas regain control via Shankaraji Narayan Sachiv. * 1704 A.D.: Aurangzeb captures it, names it "Futulgaib" ("The Divine Victory"). * 4 years later: Maratha control restored by Sarnobat Nagoji Kokate.Torna remained with Shivaji Maharaj via the Treaty of Purandar. * Important: This is the ONLY fort Aurangzeb won by fighting a real war.

Goddess Toranjai Temple: Small temple for Goddesses Somjai & Toranjai. Nearby: Toran & Mhasoba lakes. Maal & Safeli Bastions: Maal is west of Kothi Darwaaja; Safeli is south of Maal. Near Safeli is Lakadkhaana (wood storage). Leads to Kokan Darwaaja & Budhla Machi. Budhla Machi: Marathi for "Vessel," this breathtaking spot looks like an upside-down vessel. Used for western surveillance of the fort. Bini Darwaaja: Main fort entrance from Velhe, situated northwest. Left bastion collapsed. Path leads to Kothi Darwaaja. Kothi Darwaaja: East-facing entrance. Ascend rock-carved steps, pass guardrooms. Wall path east leads to Toranjai Temple. Hanuman Bastion: East of Kothi Darwaaja. Features south-facing Hanuman idol and a flag post. Path to Bhel bastion. Difficult route, guide required for Zunjar Machi (further east). Konkan Darwaaja: Preserves 17th-century construction features. Better fortification here. Lies on the path to Budhla Machi. Temple of Goddess Mengai: ONLY place to stay on the fort. Two doors; roof needs repair. Pune Ventures map available. Deepmala (oil lamp structure) in front. Zunjar Machi: Western side, great view. Currently difficult to reach due to a destroyed path.

How to Reach
**Route 1: Via Velhe Village** Start early from Pune (Swargate Bus stand). Take a bus to Velhe village. The trek to Torna Fort begins here and is straightforward. A 2-hour walk leads to the main entrance: Bini Darwaaja. **Route 2: Rajgad to Torna (The Machi Route)** This is a 5-6 hour hike\! Start at Rajgad's Male Darwaaja, descend left of Sanjeevni Machi, and pass through woods. The trail ends at Budhla Machi (climb a small rock patch). Walk 15-20 minutes eastward to the Mengai Devi temple (accommodation available).

- WaterWater Sources: Good in Winter! Bokad tank (near Mengai Devi temple) provides sufficient water. Resources dry up in summer, but a small pond near Kothi Darwaaja offers potable water.
