Gandharvgad Fort: Adventure Awaits! This ancient fort in Kolhapur Dist (Chandgad Taluka) offers breathtaking views from the Sahyadris spur, 400ft above the plain. Located ~21 miles west of Belgaum, it has both easy and difficult ascents. History: Controlled by Adilshah for years, and visited by Sadashivrao Bhau Peshwa during his Karnataka campaign. The British destroyed the fort in 1844. Explore: Today, it's mostly ruins, but features include an ancient well (potable water), Lord Hanuman and Chaloba temples, and old plinths. Enjoy the lush, natural beauty—one of the best spots in Chandgad taluka!

History & Significance

Gandharvagad Fort: Restored by Shivaji Maharaj (one of 111 forts). Key Dates: * Jan 15, 1666: Shivaji Maharaj captured it during the conquest of Panhalgad (with 5000 army). * Jul 28, 1687: Desai's of Kakti Karyati & Hukkeri Pargana captured it from Marathas. (Promised Deshmukhi of Ajamnagar/Belgaon & Chandgad/Ajra). * Adilshah controlled the fort for many years. * Sadashivrao Bhau Peshwa stayed here during his Karnataka campaign. * The British destroyed the fort in 1844.*Source: Sabhasad Bakhar*

Places to See

Start from Valkuli village (1 hr hike). At the entrance, spot Hanuman on the right. Explore residences, then the Lord Chaloba Temple. Nearby is an ancient well with potable water. Ground in front of the temple once held the Sawant palace remnants (no longer visible). the eastern part for plinths. The southern ramparts are intact and spacious, hiding 3 secret passages.
