History & Significance

Built by Adilshah on the Chapora River, this fort (originally 'Shahpura') was completed in 1617. It was held by the rulers of Pernem and the Sawants of Sawantwadi for two years. The Portuguese captured and refurbished it in 1717. Its significance lessened after 1892.

Easy Access: Paved road to the base, then a quick 10-minute trail leads to the South-East entrance. Key Features: 3 round bastions, 4 arrow-shaped bastions, and 1 capsule-shaped bastion. Don't miss the ruins of St. Anthony Church! The fort has 4 entrances in total.
