History & Significance

Built in 1615 AD by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for protection against the Marathas. It housed a huge Mughal battalion and was used for court matters. Local legend links its naming (Maas-Noor, now Machnur) to a tale: Aurangzeb tried to insult the Shiv Linga with beef (later turned to white flowers by a miracle) after his men failed to destroy it due to a bee attack. Ashamed, Aurangzeb began annual donations of Rs.400 and Rs.6. Today, the Government of Maharashtra continues an annual donation of Rs.480 to the temple.

Places to See

Explore This Spot! **The Fort** A protective wall and two bastions shield the main entrance. The fort is well-preserved. Inside, find porches, a Mosque, and a stone water tank. Behind the Mosque is the deep basin of the Bhima river (note: river flooding has damaged the riverside fortification). **Siddheshwar Temple Complex** This black stone complex, resembling the Tuljapur temple, is located inside the village. Pass two porches, then ascend stairs to the second doorway, where two carved stones called 'Veerghal' are set. Inside, see an approx 3 in Nandi statue. Two more doorways lead to the Shiv Linga: the first door is 5 in high, and the second is 2.5 in (like a window). A spacious arcade is behind the temple, built on the river bank.
