About Ramgad

Ramgad Fort: Built by Shivaji Maharaj on a strategic hill separated from the Sahyadri mountains. Served as a key vigilance base, overseeing the vital River Gad trade route. The river, originating near Fort Rangana, flows 80 km to the Arabian Sea. Main doorway, fortification wall, and bastion remain intact today!

Places to See

Explore the Fort! Entry: Go through the 8' high main doorway, flanked by two 18' high bastions. Find a secret doorway (Chor Darwaja) just past the gatekeepers' porches. Holi cha Maal: Keep the fort wall on your right to reach this open space. Here, discover 7 buried cannons; the longest is 7' long. Second Entrance: A ruined, north-facing entrance (Gomukhi architectural style) is opposite the cannons. This route led to Holiwadi in Ramgad village, but is no longer accessible. Citadel & Idols: The citadel's entrance is ruined and sits in the center. Nearby, stairs lead to a wall with a Lord Ganesh Idol and Shalunka (Shiv Linga base). Fort Structure: The 18' high fort wall spans 640 meters. It features 15 bastions, each 18' high with three windows. Views: From the left bastions of the main doorway, you can see the Gad River.
