About Irshalgad

Irshalgad is a spectacular boat shaped pinnacle located between Matheran and Panvel in the Karjat region, easily visible from the Mumbai Pune Highway, and is especially famous for its iconic Nedhe or Needle Hole, a massive natural cavity carved into the rock that offers dramatic wind swept panoramic views of the Sahyadris; situated near forts like Prabalgad and Malanggad, and with landmarks such as Devni Pinnacle, Matheran, Peb Fort, and Mhasmal visible from the highway, the fort is accessible via a motorable road to its base village, while the region’s heavy rainfall supports rice cultivation as the primary local crop, adding a rural charm to this rugged trekking destination.

History & Significance

Irshalgad is not technically a conventional fort but a dramatic rocky pinnacle, which explains its relatively low historical profile, yet it held strategic importance as a watchtower like structure used by the Marathas to monitor trade routes and nearby strongholds such as Prabalgad and Karnala Fort; after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the Kalyan Bhiwandi region up to Rairi in May 1666, Irshalgad came under Maratha control, strengthening surveillance over this crucial belt, and located right next to Prabalgad in the Karjat region, the pinnacle today stands as a thrilling trekking destination with deep emotional significance, as on January 23, 1972, Kumar Prakash Durve tragically lost his life here, and every year on January 26 trekkers from Mumbai and Thane gather to pay tribute and remember him.

Places to See

From the Irshal plateau, the trail advances toward the towering pinnacle, passing a rock cut water tank along the way; as you approach the upper section, a straightforward rock climbing patch leads you to the iconic Nedhe, the massive natural rock hole that defines Irshalgad’s identity, and beyond it you will find a drinking water tank on the left and a cave on the right, while reaching the true summit above this section requires proper artificial rock climbing gear due to the near vertical exposure. Key highlights include the Irshaldevi Temple at the plateau level, the dramatic Nedhe formation, multiple rock cut cisterns, and breathtaking panoramic views stretching across Prabalgad, Matheran, Chanderi Fort, Malanggad, Karnala Fort, Manikgad Fort, Morbe Dam, and Kalavantin Durg, making Irshalgad one of the most thrilling climber friendly pinnacles in the Sahyadris.

How to Reach

By Train: Take a Central Line local to Karjat or Panvel. Take a shared auto/bus to Chowk Phata. From Chowk, it’s a 20-minute walk to Nanivali. By Road: Drive on the Mumbai-Pune Old Highway (NH4) to Chowk, then head towards Nanivali village.

Important Notes

Reaching the final pinnacle of Irshalgad is extremely difficult and strictly technical in nature. The ascent beyond the upper rock section toward the flag post requires proper rock climbing skills and should not be treated as a regular trek. A minimum 100 foot rope along with specialized climbing equipment is essential for a safe attempt. The last vertical stretch demands professional gear, anchor setup knowledge, and technical expertise. It is strongly advised not to attempt the summit without an experienced guide or trained climber in the team. Trekkers must also maintain respect near the memorial areas dedicated to the landslide victims close to the old village site. This section of the trail carries emotional significance and should be approached with responsibility and sensitivity.
