Discover Mahimatgad Fort! Located in Sangameshwar taluka, Ratnagiri district, this sprawling South-to-North fort boasts lush vegetation and hidden remnants in the woods. Nearby villages are Kundi (North) and Nigudwadi (East). Locals celebrate Dussehra here annually.

Fort Highlights: Entrance: Intact eastward door with doorkeeper porches. Route 1:1. Water Tank (Dry): Built into the fortification wall; leaks cause it to be mostly dry. 2. Potable Water Tank: Supported by pillars. 3. Fortification Wall: Toilet built in. Note: Wall built with stacked stones, no limestone.Route 2 (Upstairs from Entrance):1. Dilapidated Doorway. 2. Water Tank (Dry): To the left, leaks cause it to be mostly dry. 3. Temple: Goddess Mahishasur Mardini (plus other idols). Two small canons out front. 4. Path from Temple: Leads to a large canon hidden among trees. 5. Path from Tank: Halfway along, a path goes up the hill. 6. Hill Summit: Temple of Lord Shiva (metal-covered Shiv linga) with a Nandi outside. Stone-carved idol of Lord Hanuman further on.Citadel Base: Accessible via a route through the trees. Tapering bastion visible, difficult approach. Viewpoint: Flag pole area offers a full fort view. From the citadel, see Vishalgad to the south and the adjoining region.

Journey & Transport

How to Reach

**Reaching the Fort:**1. **Start at Devrukh Village:** 16 kms from Sangameshwar (Mumbai-Goa highway). 2. **To Nive Village:** 6 kms from Devrukh. 3. **Fork in the Road:** * Right: Marleshwar. * Left: Nigudwadi & Kundi villages (10 kms). 4. **From Nigudwadi:** Walk the unpaved road for 1 hr. 5. **Look for the Path:** Find a small path through dense vegetation. The fort will be on your right. 6. **Reach the Pass:** You'll arrive at a pass between hills. Spot Mahimatgad bastion (right), mountain ridge (left), and the path to Kundi village (ahead). 7. **Enter the Woods:** Take the path to the right (into the woods). 20 mins to the open space below the bastion. 8. **Final Trail:** Find the path to the left, marked by two stacked stones. Follow this trail for 20 mins to the fort. 9. **Pro-Tip:** Keep the bastion on your right while ascending\! Look out for butterflies on the way\!**Rainy Season Route (Nigudwadi to Kundi):** Use a Jeep or Car on the unpaved road to reach halfway. The remaining climb is 1 hr.

Important Notes

Plan a 2-Day Sangameshwar Trip! **Day 1:** Visit Mahimatgad in the morning, then proceed 16 kms to Marleshwar. Head 19 kms to Sangameshwar Kasba (3 kms off Mumbai-Goa highway) to see the Sambhaji Maharaj statue and Karneshwar temple. Overnight stay at Bhavanigad. **Day 2:** Explore Bhavanigad. Travel 45 kms to Gowalkot (Govindgad) in Chiplun. **Heads Up:** Nigudwadi and Kundi villages are in opposite directions (approx. 3 hrs from each).
