About Nivati Fort
Nivati Fort: Built by Shivaji Maharaj to guard the sea route from Karli creek to Vengurla. Located near Nivati village, south of Sindhudurga fort (10 km from Malvan, 15 km from Vengurla).
Best time to visit
The best season to visit forts in India is typically during the winter months, from October to March, to avoid the intense heat and monsoon rains. I will use my general knowledge to provide a generic recommendation for the best season to visit a fort. --> Cooler months are best (Oct-Mar) to explore comfortably and avoid heat/rain.
History & Significance
Built by Shivaji Maharaj (post-Sindhudurga). Seized by Sawantwadi rulers, then captured by Ismail Khan (Portuguese) in 1748. The Chatrapati of Karveer took it from the Sawants in 1787, but the Sawants reclaimed it in 1803. The British finally captured it on Feb 4, 1818.
Places to See
Explore the Fort! Climb stone steps flanked by a moat (20x10 deep, now tree-covered). The entrance is mostly gone, but a big bastion and ramparts remain. Head right for rampart views. From the western point, see wonderful orange rocks and the beautiful Bhogve beach. Spot the Vengurla lighthouse on "Burnt Rocks." The citadel is moat-strengthened; walls and mansion plinths are visible. See "Junagad," a rock 20ft into the sea, climbable! Don't miss "Shivaji's Pond" water tanks in the village, and the Vetoba temple/carvings in Parule village.
Important Notes
Malvan Fort Run: Hire a private vehicle + start early! Hit Nivati (25 km), Yeshwantgad Redi (40 km), and Terekhol (7 km). Return to Malvan or overnight in Panjim.
