About Ettina Bhuja

Translating to "Ox's Shoulder" in Kannada due to its distinct hump-like shape, Ettina Bhuja is one of the most uniquely recognizable peaks in the Charmadi Ghats. The trek offers a beautiful transition from dense Shola forests to open grasslands, culminating in a thrilling, steep rock climb to the summit that provides breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding ranges.

History & Significance

The peak serves as a prominent natural landmark for the historic trade routes through the Charmadi Ghats. The Byrapura base features the ancient Sri Nanya Bhairaveshwara Temple, deeply revered by the locals.

How to Reach

By Road: From Bengaluru, drive towards Hassan, then take the deviation to Mudigere. From Mudigere, drive to Byrapura village to reach the starting point. By Bus: Take a KSRTC bus to Mudigere, then hire a local jeep to the Nanya Bhairaveshwara Temple in Byrapura.

Important Notes

Permits: A trekking permit must be obtained from the Karnataka Forest Department (often booked via Eco-Trails). Leeches: The forest canopy section is heavily infested with leeches during and immediately after the monsoon; carrying salt or wearing leech socks is essential. Nearby police station: Mudigere Police Station / Dharmasthala Police Station Nearby hospital: Government Hospital, Mudigere

Facilities

  • StayCamping at the peak is prohibited. Trekkers typically stay at homestays near Mudigere/Byrapura or in Dharmasthala.
  • FoodThere are no food stalls on the trail. It is mandatory to carry a packed lunch and snacks from the base village.
  • WaterThere are small streams in the initial forest section, but it is highly recommended to carry at least 2 liters of water per person from the start.
