**Mangalgad (or Kangorigad): The Impregnable Fort of Jawali Valley** * **Location:** Dense Jawali Valley. * **History:** Ruled by the "More" Dynasty for generations. The region was naturally fortified by dense forests, huge mountains, and deep valleys in the medieval period. * **Purpose:** Built to safeguard critical trade routes (Bhop Ghat, Varandh Ghat, & Aswal Khind) connecting Mahad (a main trade center) to various places. * **Surrounding Forts/Areas:** Mahabaleshwar, Makarandgad, Chandragad, Pratapgad, Kawala Fort, & Parghat.

History & Significance

Mangalgad (formerly Kangorigad) Built by Chandrarao More in the Jawli valley to protect trade routes. 1656: Shivaji Maharaj seized Jawli on Jan 15th, gaining Kangorigad, Dhawalgad, Rayri, and Baji Prabhu Deshpande! He renamed it "Mangalgad." Used for political prisoners due to easy access from Raigad. 1689: Zulfikarkhan (Itkadarkhan), sent by Aurangjeb after killing Sambhaji Maharaj, blockaded Raigad and seized Mangalgad in March. 1690: Ramchandrapant, Minister of Chatrapati Rajaram Maharaj, retook Mangalgad. 1817: Baapu Gokhale arrested and imprisoned Colonel Hunter & Morrison (Madras regiment) here. 1818: Colonel Prother captured the fort.

**Mangalgad Highlights** * **Size:** Stretched 1485 (E-W) x 264 (N-S). * **Main Entrance:** Destroyed, but original bastions and ramparts remain. * **The Path:** * **Right:** Leads to the Citadel (top-most big tank and remnants of 2 mansions). * **Left (Machi):** Leads to Kangori Devi Temple. * **Near Kangori Devi Temple:** * **Right:** Rock-cut water cistern with steps. * **Left:** Dry tank where found idols are kept. * **Kangori Devi Temple:** Built on a rock platform (roof destroyed). Idols of Kangori Devi and Lord Bhairav found here. * **Viewpoint:** Behind the temple, an end point with a bastion and flag post offers a surrounding glimpse. * **Water Supply:** Two tanks near the east-most point (prominent bastion) provide potable water year-round.

How to Reach

**Reaching Kangorigad Fort** **Primary Route:**1. Board Thane-Pimpalwadi ST Bus. 2. Exit at Dudhanewadi/Kangorigad stop. 3. Find Kangori Sidhheshwar temple (next to a hill). 4. Behind the temple, take the right path (around a field boundary). 5. Ascend for 30-45 minutes to the hilltop. 6. See the western bastion, climb the small rock patch, then walk left to reach the fort entrance (it's steep\!).**Alternative Route (Steeper/Faster Ascent/Recommended for Descent):** * From Kangori Sidhheshwar temple, hike straight across the field. This way is steeper but faster to the hilltop.**Alternative Transport if no Direct Thane-Pimpalwadi Bus:**1. Go to Mahad. 2. Go to Birwadi. 3. Take Birwadi-Pimplwadi Bus (every two hours), or take a Jeep/Rickshaw (10-seater, Rs.20/- per person) to Dudhanewadi.
