About Gavilgad

Gavilgad Fort: Named after the pastoral Gavlis centuries ago, this fort is now deserted—only panthers and cattle visit the old water tanks (Devatalav and Khantalav). The Archaeological department deems restoration impossible, though efforts are made to clear vegetation. The durbar steps, where princes once held audience, are a popular picnic spot (especially from Cikhaldara in hot weather) thanks to the shade of a great banyan tree. Warning: The two main tanks are heavily silted, and the water is unusable.

History & Significance

**Gawilgarh Fort: A History of Sieges** Named for the local Gawli (cow herds) of Berar (modern Amravati). *Construction:* Originally mud, major fortification occurred in 1425. Persian historian Firishta records Ahmed Shah Wali (9th Muzaffarid King) built it while encamped at Ellichpur. *1803 Battle:* Besieged during the 2nd Maratha War by Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington). After failed main gate attempts, Captain Campbell led the 94th Scottish Brigade up the ravine and forced entry. The British suffered approx. 150 casualties in the final assault. *Aftermath:* Returned to the Marathas after peace, but ultimately abandoned.
