About Kodachadri

Kodachadri is the 10th highest peak in Karnataka and is famous for offering a "complete" trekking experience. The trail seamlessly transitions through agricultural lands, dense tropical jungles, a massive multi-tiered waterfall, and rolling alpine meadows, ending at a historic stone temple at the summit.

Best time to visit

September, October, November, December, January, February

History & Significance

The mountain holds immense spiritual significance. It is believed that the great 8th-century philosopher Adi Shankaracharya meditated at the summit, where a small stone structure called the Sarvajna Peetha now stands in his honor.

Places to See

Hidlumane Falls, the dense Shola forest canopy, Ganesha Guha (an ancient cave near the top), the Sarvajna Peetha temple, and sunset views over the Arabian Sea (visible on exceptionally clear days).

Journey & Transport

How to Reach

By Road: From Bengaluru, drive to Shivamogga, then proceed towards Nittur. By Bus: Take an overnight bus to Kollur or Kundapura, then catch a local bus or jeep to Nittur. The base point (Kattinahole) is a short ride from Nittur town.

Important Notes

Leeches: If traveling between June and October, leech socks, salt, or Dettol sprays are absolutely necessary. Jeep Return: If you plan to take a jeep back down instead of walking the 14 km return leg, it must be pre-negotiated or booked at the base, as finding an empty jeep at the top during peak season is difficult. Nearby police station: Kollur Police Station / Nagara Police Station Nearby hospital: Primary Health Centre, Nittur / Government Hospital, Kollur

Facilities

  • StayCamping on the peak or anywhere inside the forest is strictly prohibited by the forest department. Trekkers must stay at homestays in the base villages (Nittur/Kattinahole) or at the PWD guest house area below the peak.
  • FoodYou must carry a packed lunch (usually arranged by your base homestay) for the trek. There are a few small stalls selling basic snacks and tea near the jeep drop-off point/PWD guest house, just before the final summit push.
  • WaterFresh water is available at Hidlumane Falls and a few forest streams, but carrying at least 2 liters of water from the start is highly recommended.
