History & Significance
Ancient Trade Route Guard! This fort protected the vital Bijapur–Pandharpur–Satara–Wai–Mahad trade route, part of a fort chain between Satara and Pandharpur. It served as a guard for Satara. Historically, a garrison of ~75 was maintained. Note: Descendants of Patil and Kulkarni still receive wages for the former Sabnis and Havaldar posts in the village!
Places to See
Fort Highlights (1 Hour Tour) Trail starts on the North Face, leading along the ramparts to the East Entrance. Look for the unique, protruding elephant pillars! The entrance is cleverly hidden until you're close—a design meant to protect against attack. Climb the huge entrance bastion's stairs for a complete fort view. At the mountain peak: Find the Hanuman temple, a large pond, and rainwater cisterns (one recently renovated). Notice the remnants of old porches (house/office). The ramparts are well-preserved. Explore the small door through the fort wall on the eastern end. Take a scenic walk around the fort's edge on your return!
