About Makalidurga
Makalidurga is a highly picturesque weekend trek, distinct from other monolithic climbs due to its unique setting. The trail begins with a walk alongside an active, winding railway track before cutting into a scrub-forest trail thick with aromatic lemongrass. The hike culminates at a ruined fort that offers stunning views of the train tracks snaking around the hill's base.

History & Significance
The hill fort served as an important granary and strategic outpost during the late 18th century. It changed hands between local chieftains, the Marathas, Tipu Sultan, and eventually fell to British forces.

The winding railway track curve from the summit, Muthurayaswamy Temple at the base, an ancient Shiva temple at the peak, the ruined fort walls, and panoramic views of the adjacent Gundamagere Lake.

How to Reach
By Road: Drive from Bengaluru towards Doddaballapura, then proceed about 15 km further to reach the Makalidurga railway crossing parking area. By Train: A highly popular and scenic method for this specific trek is taking an early morning passenger train directly from Bengaluru (e.g., Cantonment or Majestic) to Makalidurga station, which drops you right at the trailhead.
Important Notes
Safety: Exercise extreme caution during the initial stretch along the railway track; stay off the actual tracks and listen for approaching trains. Footwear: The trail has sections of loose gravel and smooth rock, making shoes with good grip essential. Facilities
- StayCamping at the top or near the fort ruins is strictly prohibited by the forest department. Because of its proximity to the city, it is almost exclusively executed as a half-day trip with trekkers returning to Bengaluru.
- FoodThere are no food vendors on the trail or at the summit. Trekkers must carry packed snacks. Basic tea stalls and local snack vendors can sometimes be found near the railway station base.
- WaterNo natural or filtered water sources exist on the hike. Carrying at least 2 liters of water per person is mandatory.
