About Mullayanagiri Peak

Standing as the highest peak in Karnataka, Mullayanagiri is the crown jewel of the state's trekking scene. The mountain is famous for its fiercely strong winds, plunging valleys, and the highly scenic, knife-edge ridge walk that connects it to the neighboring Baba Budangiri peak.

History & Significance

The peak is named after Mullappa Swamy, a revered sage who is believed to have meditated in the small caves located just beneath the summit. A small, peaceful temple dedicated to him stands at the absolute top of the peak.

The Mullappa Swamy Temple at the summit, the small meditation caves below the temple, the Nandi statue, Seethalayyanagiri (a smaller peak with a temple on the drive up), and the panoramic views of the Chikmagalur town.

How to Reach

By Road: Drive from Bengaluru to Chikmagalur. From Chikmagalur town, drive about 15 km towards Baba Budangiri to reach the Sarpadhari arch (for the trek) or continue driving up the narrow Ghat road to the Mullayanagiri parking point. By Bus: Take a KSRTC bus to Chikmagalur, then hire a local jeep to drop you at the trail base.

Important Notes

Wind & Weather: The wind at the summit can be incredibly strong and cold; carrying a windcheater jacket is mandatory year-round. Traffic: The road leading to the top is exceptionally narrow and prone to massive traffic jams during weekends and holidays. Leeches: Present on the Sarpadhari trail during the monsoon. Nearby police station: Chikmagalur Rural Police Station Nearby hospital: District Hospital, Chikmagalur / Holy Cross Hospital

Facilities

  • StayPitching tents on the peak is strictly prohibited by the forest department. Trekkers generally stay in homestays or resorts in Chikmagalur or along the Baba Budangiri road.
  • FoodThere are no food stalls on the Sarpadhari trekking trail. However, if you reach the summit or the main parking lot, there are several small vendors selling Maggi, sweet corn, omelets, and tea.
  • Waterhere are no natural water sources on the trekking trail itself. You must carry at least 2 liters of water from the base. Bottled water can be purchased at the parking lot stalls near the top.
