About Narasimha Parvatha

Narasimha Parvatha is the tallest peak in the Agumbe Ghats. It offers a spectacular, grueling adventure that transitions from the thick, dark canopy of a tropical rainforest into endless, rolling Shola grasslands. The peak provides panoramic views of the Kudremukh ranges and the coastal plains.

Best time to visit

October, November, December, January, February

History & Significance

The Agumbe region is famously known as the "Cherrapunji of the South" due to its massive rainfall. It also served as the iconic filming location for the classic television series Malgudi Days. The peak gets its name from the nearby ancient Rishyasringa temple in Kigga.

Places to See

Barkana Falls (India's 10th highest waterfall, viewed en route from the Malandur side), Sirimane Falls (near Kigga), the ancient Kigga Temple, and the dense Agumbe rainforests.

Journey & Transport

How to Reach

By Road: Drive from Bangalore to Sringeri, then head to Kigga (about 10 km away). Alternatively, drive to Agumbe and take a local jeep to Malandur. By Bus: Regular KSRTC overnight buses run to both Sringeri and Agumbe from major Karnataka cities

Important Notes

Wildlife: Agumbe is the King Cobra capital of India; stay on the trail and rely on your guide. Elephants and bison are also common. Leeches: The forest floor is heavily infested with leeches for most of the year; salt, Dettol, and leech socks are absolutely essential. February Nearby police station: Agumbe Police Station / Sringeri Police Station Nearby hospital: Government Hospital, Sringeri / Agumbe Primary Health Centre

Facilities

  • StayPitching tents on the peak is highly restricted by the forest department due to wildlife. Trekkers usually stay in homestays in Agumbe, Sringeri, or Kigga.
  • FoodThere are absolutely no food stalls on the trail. You must carry a packed lunch and high-energy snacks from your base village.
  • WaterWater is available at the Barkana Falls stream and a small pond near the peak (which may not be clean enough for drinking without a filter). Carrying at least 2 to 3 liters of water per person from the start is mandatory.
