About Sailplane Gliding Hadapsar
This is the purest form of aviation. Operated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Gliding Centre Pune (GCP) is one of the few places in India where everyday people can experience unpowered flight. The Aircraft: You fly in a two-seater sailplane (one pilot, one passenger). There is no engine. The Launch (Winch Launch): Because there is no engine, the glider is connected to a heavy-duty winch (a motorized cable drum) positioned at the other end of the runway. The winch pulls the cable at high speed, launching the glider into the air much like a kite. Once at a safe altitude (usually around 1000-1500 feet), the pilot releases the cable. The Experience: Once the cable is released, it is pure, absolute silence. The pilot navigates by catching "thermals" (upward currents of warm air) to stay aloft. You get a stunning, peaceful bird’s-eye view of Pune. The Operations & Friction: It typically operates on Sundays (weather permitting). It is heavily subsidized by the government, making it incredibly cheap. However, there is no online booking. It operates strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning enthusiasts often have to queue up at the gates at 6:00 AM to secure a token.
