About Savandurga
Savandurga is widely considered the largest monolithic rock formation in Asia. The hill consists of two massive peaks: "Karigudda" (the black hill) and "Biligudda" (the white hill). The official trekking trail runs entirely up Biligudda. The hike is an intense cardiovascular workout, offering trekkers an unobstructed, sweeping view of the surrounding forests and the gleaming backwaters of the Manchanabele Dam as they ascend.
Best time to visit
November, December, January, February
History & Significance
The monolith is naturally impenetrable and was heavily fortified over centuries by the Hoysala kings, Kempegowda, and eventually Tipu Sultan. Due to its steep, sheer drops, British forces under Lord Cornwallis dubbed it the "Fort of Death" before eventually breaching it in 1791.
Places to See
Sri Savandi Veerabhadraswamy Temple and Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple at the base, the ruined fort walls scaling the monolith, the Nandi statue at the summit, and panoramic views of the Arkavathi River system.

Facilities
- StayCamping on the monolith or inside the surrounding state forest is strictly prohibited. Because it is located just 50 km from Bengaluru, it is almost exclusively executed as a half-day trip.
- FoodThere are small local stalls near the base temple selling tender coconut, lime soda, and basic snacks. However, there are no food vendors on the massive rock face itself.
- WaterThe trail has no natural water sources or vendors. Carrying a minimum of 2 liters of water per person is mandatory to prevent dehydration on the exposed granite climb.
