About Skandagiri (Kalavara Durga)

Skandagiri is incredibly famous among the Bangalore trekking community for its thrilling night hike and magical sunrise views. The trail is rugged and rocky, leading up to a spectacular vantage point where, on winter mornings, trekkers are rewarded with a view of a literal sea of clouds blanketing the landscape below.

Best time to visit

November, December, January, February

History & Significance

The peak is crowned by the ruins of Kalavara Durga, a fort originally built by local chieftains and later extensively fortified and used by Tipu Sultan as a strategic base. It was ultimately captured and dismantled by British forces under Lord Cornwallis in 1791.

Places to See

The Papagni Mutt at the base, the ruined stone walls and arches of Tipu Sultan's fort, an ancient Shiva temple at the summit, and the spectacular cloud-covered sunrise.

Journey & Transport

How to Reach

By Road: Drive from Bangalore towards Chikballapur via NH44 (the Airport Road). Just before Chikballapur town, take a deviation towards Kalavara village (about 70 km total from Bangalore). The trek starting point is at the Papagni Mutt.

Important Notes

Headlamps/Torches: Absolutely mandatory as the trail is pitch black and rocky. Warm Clothing: It gets incredibly cold and windy at the summit while waiting for the sunrise, so a good jacket is essential. Permits: Weekend slots sell out weeks in advance, so plan ahead. Nearby police station: Chikballapur Rural Police Station Nearby hospital: District Government Hospital, Chikballapur

Facilities

  • StayPitching tents or camping overnight at the summit is strictly prohibited by the forest department. Since this is primarily executed as a night trek, visitors usually drive back to Bangalore after sunrise or stay in hotels in Chikballapur.
  • Food There are no food stalls operating on the trail during the night ascent. Occasionally, locals sell tea and Maggi at the base or summit around dawn, but you must carry your own energy snacks and breakfast.
  • WaterThere are no reliable water sources on the rocky trail. It is mandatory to carry at least 2 liters of drinking water per person from the base.
