History & Significance

Built on the north bank of Mandvi River. In the 17th century, Dutch and Portuguese trade rivalry was fierce. In 1604, Dutch merchants blockaded Portuguese ships at the Mandvi river mouth. The existing canons, Ris Magos (north bank) and Gasper Dias (south bank), failed. To break the blockade, the Portuguese built Aguada fort (north bank of Mandvi) and Mormugao fort (mouth of Zuari river) in 1606.
