Arnala Fort: Built on Arnala Island's NE side. Located where the Vaitarna river (North-Konkan) meets the sea, giving it a strategic watchpoint over the creek and surrounding area.

History & Significance

**Arnala Sea Fort History** Built by Sultan Mahmood Begda (Gujarat) in 1516. The Portuguese seized it in 1530, reinforcing structures and ruling for over 200 years. Marathas later took control; Bajirao-I reconstructed the fort. British forces captured it in 1817.

Places to See

Fort Details & Highlights: * **Shape & Defenses:** Approx. rectangular, protected by strong, continuous ramparts (\~10m high). Bastions are well-preserved. * **Entrances:** Three total. The main North entrance features two big bastions. Look for nice carvings of an elephant and a tiger on the arch, symbolizing the ruler's strength. * **Historical Note:** A lithograph confirms Bajirao Peshwa reconstructed the fort. * **Inside the Fort:** Find the temples of Tryambakeshwar and Bhavani Mata. The Tryambakeshwar Mahadev temple has a nicely built octagonal lake in front. Drinking water wells are also available inside. * **Nearby:** The Kalikamata temple is located on the way to the main entrance. * **Must-See Feature:** A separate bastion, visible from the beach, is located slightly apart from the main fort and has its own small entrance. * **Visit Duration:** Allow 30-45 minutes to explore completely. Walk the strong ramparts for views, or check the projection above the main entrance for a complete view of the fort.

How to Reach

How to Get to Arnala Fort:1. Reach Virar Station (Western Railway). 2. Take an S.T. bus or auto-rickshaw (Arnala is \~10 km). 3. From Arnala Village Beach, take a commuter boat. 4. Boat Service: 6 AM-12:30 PM & 4 PM-7 PM. 5. Boat ride to fort: 5-10 mins.
