History & Significance

Fort History: Possibly Bhoj-period due to cisterns. Portuguese captured it from the King of Gujarat in the 16th century, building fortifications. Peshwe conquered it in 1737, followed by British rule.

Places to See

Fort Plateau Highlights: * **Lord Shankar Temple:** Recently rehabilitated. * **Cisterns:** Two are visible in front of the temple. * **Left Route:** Leads down past seven adjoining cisterns. One has clean water, two are spoiled, and four are clogged. Dilapidated remnants are to the right of the temple. Fortifications are visible in spots. * **Right Route (Up Hill):** Find three large cisterns. Two hold drinking water; one is clogged. * **Lord Hanumana Idol:** Located near these cisterns. * **Bastion & Temple:** Continue to a dilapidated bastion with a Lord Hanumana Temple to its left. * **Summit:** A 15-minute walk up the steps leads to the top. * **Natural Wonders:** Marvel at natural pinnacles formed by wind erosion. The man-shaped pinnacle is the most attractive spot\! Its shape changes when viewed from different directions. * **Lord Krishna Temple:** Located further ahead on this route.

How to Reach

**Route: Via Vaghote Village**1. Reach Wada from Kalyan bus depot. 2. Take a bus towards Palghar/Manor and alight at Vaghote village. 3. *Tip:* Six-seater rickshaws are also available from Wada. 4. Walk down the foot-track (fort on your right). After 5 mins, turn right. 5. A short walk leads to a beautiful dam with the fort's reflection. 6. Cross the dam to begin the climb (complete U traverse). 7. **Climb Time:** Approx. 2 hours from Vaghote village.
