About Kolkewadi

**Fort Location & Trek Info:** Built on a hill across the Sahyadri range, 10 km from Chiplun, behind Kolkewadi dam. The trek is a unique experience! The path is covered in thick shed leaves. **Wildlife Alert:** Look for deer markings on tree trunks (denoting territory). You might spot tiger pug marks or scat remains\!

History & Significance

Fort History: Records are scarce, but caves & water tanks suggest it dates back to the Shilahar era. Built to watch the region.

Places to See

**Fascinating Fort Exploration**1. **Jungle Approach:** Pass through a thick jungle to reach the mountain arm. The fort summit is visible at \~100 ft height. 2. **Circumnavigation Path:** A path skirts the mountain. Find a 10x5 water tank containing Veerghals & sculptures. 3. **Sahyadri Cleft:** Descend a small rock patch to arrive in the cleft between the fort and the Sahyadri range. 4. **Potable Water:** Climb the main Sahyadri range to find a rock-built water tank with potable water. Look for pug marks—wild animals frequent the area\! 5. **Mid-Hill Caves:** Return to the fort hill and ascend to the midpoint. Follow the left path to two rock-carved caves. 6. **Fort Entrance:** The main entrance may have been near the narrow pathway leading up from the caves. 7. **Cave Details:** One cave is intact; the other lacks a roof. The intact cave (5x5x8) has windows—likely doorkeepers' porches. The roofless cave has holds leading to an upper, two-pillar supported cave. 8. **The "Cot" Cave:** Ahead, find a cave with entrance carvings and an inner attick-type structure, locally called “Palang” (Cot). Expect bats\! Two more caves are further on. 9. **Summit Views:** Head to the summit for stunning views of Jungli Jaigad fort, Kolkewadi dam, Math hill, and the beautiful Sahyadri mountain range.
