Vetalwadi Fort (aka Vasai Fort) Location: Chhatrapati Sambhaji M. Nagar district, near Soygaon taluka. (Note: Not the Vasai fort in Thane district). Highlights: A complete fort experience! Solid, huge fortification, bastions, and buildings are still in good condition, drawing trekkers. Pro-Tip for Travelers: If traveling from Mumbai or distant places, easily cover nearby sites: Janjala, Sutonda, Bhanshigad, Lahugad, Vetalgad forts, and Rudreshwar caves.

**Vetalwadi Fort Highlights** **Entrance:** Access via Halada Ghat (from Undangaon diversion on Sillod–Jalgaon road). Guarded by 2 huge bastions (approx. 20ft tall) + a third behind them, designed for defense. Features a decorative balustrade. The north-facing entrance is called **Janjala Darwaja** (faces Janjala fort). Look for 2 Sharabh sculptures and guard porches. From the roof opening: views of fort walls, Halada Ghat, and Vetalwadi Dam. Right of entrance: Dry cistern with pillars. **The Citadel & Key Structures:** Follow the trail to the right past a large, bat-hosting bastion to reach the east-facing bastion. 5-min walk to the **Citadel**. Nearby cistern: **"Tel-Tupache Taake"** (oil/ghee tank). See a granary and remains of a building. **Namajgir Mosque:** Carved signatures of Nizam and a cross on the walls. Pond and tomb in front. **Bardari (Northern Point):** Building with 2 distinct arches; said to be for royal leisure (similar to one on Deogiri fort). Features 2 rows of arches. From Bardari: View of the main entrance and Vetalwadi village. Trail back to the entrance features a canon (approx. 6'10" long). **Secret Door:** Located in the fortification. Guarded by two bastions. One door faces north (door frame height \~20, with 2 carved Sharabhs). Guard porches inside. Second door faces west. 20-min walk to Vetalwadi village from here. **Rudreshwar Caves:** Ancient Brahmin-type caves, 2-3 km east of Vetalwadi. 45-min hike from Vetalwadi. Sculptures include Lord Narsinga, Ganesh, Bhairav, Saptmatruka, Shiv linga, and Nandi.

**Getting to Vetalwadi Fort** **By Private Vehicle (2 Routes):**1. **Chhatrapati Sambhaji M. Nagar - Sillod - Undangaon Route:** * Sillod is 65 km from Chhatrapati Sambhaji M. Nagar (on Chhatrapati Sambhaji M. Nagar-Jalgaon Rd). * Turn off 14 km north of Sillod for Undangaon (5 km). * Halda village is 12 km from Undangaon. * Halda Pass starts here. The fort's Southern Entrance is 3 km ahead. 2. **Chhatrapati Sambhaji M. Nagar - Sillod - Phardapur Route:** * Phardapur is 105 km from Chhatrapati Sambhaji M. Nagar (on Chhatrapati Sambhaji M. Nagar-Jalgaon Hwy). * Travel 15 km west to Soygaon. * Travel 4 km south to Vetalwadi village. * Climbing time from Vetalwadi village: 45 minutes.**By Public Transport:** * Take the Chhatrapati Sambhaji M. Nagar – Soygaon ST bus. * From Soygaon, hire a 6-seater auto or bus to Vetalwadi.
