Visapur

Lohgad & Visapur, nestled in Nane Maval, first came under Nizamshahi after the Bahmani rule ended. It became Mughal territory via the Treaty of Mahuli (Shahajiraje & Mughals). By 1660, Shivaji Maharaj recaptured most forts, but lost them to the Mughals again in the Treaty of Purandar (1665). Aurangzeb later broke the treaty. In 1682, Mughal Sardar Shahbuddin killed 60 Marathas, but survivors escaped Visapur to Kusapur village. A century later, Colonel Prother captured Visapur on March 4, 1818, with Lohgad falling the next day. FYI: Bhaje caves are carved into the same Visapur mountain. Look closely: damage on Bhaje caves from Mughals/English (likely cannon fire) is still evident!

**Visapur Fort Highlights** A powerhouse of fortification! Built on a massive plateau, its position made it difficult to attack with cannons. Though Bhaje caves show destruction from Mughals and British, Visapur remained largely unaffected. Don't miss the long, stretched ramparts! **Unique Features:** * **Giant Stone Wheel:** Used to grind the cementing mix (lime, jaggery, lead) and driven by bulls. It’s the largest of its kind. * **Western Bastion:** A rare sight, built completely *inside* the main ramparts. * **Remnants:** Explore old residential places and a fountain on the northwestern side.
